Cat® mid-sized asphalt pavers: compact size, simple operation, more flexibility for urban and rural jobs

The new Cat Mid-Sized Asphalt Pavers (AP400, AP455, AP500 & AP555) offer contractors more opportunities to pave both urban and rural applications. Their compact size and small footprint provide exceptional manoeuvrability in tight spaces like narrow streets and small car parks, yet, when equipped with extensions it delivers a wide paving range for rural roads and wide streets.

What makes these pavers so appealing is that they’ve been designed for easy transport. The 14-16 tonne weight class accommodates a variety of trailer options, while the up to 2.55-meter transport width enables efficient movement down narrow streets and country roads.

Focusing on the crew, these machines are comfortable and easy to operate. The elimination of the engine exhaust stack provides a clear view to the hopper and sides of the machine. The swing out seats provide views to the steering guide as well as enhanced communication between the truck driver and paver operator. Optional dual consoles, heated seated and ventilation system are available for a more comfortable experience.

Flexible undercarriage options include wheel, steel track, and the Cat Mobil-trac™ System. The Mobil-trac System provides travel speeds similar to wheel pavers while also providing enhanced flotation, traction, and smooth transitions in and out of cuts.

What makes this machine so intuitive and easy to operate is the simplified menu structure with touchscreen capability that enables the operator to quickly navigate between the feeder system settings, machine operating conditions, screed heat, and optional Cat Grade Control functions to name a few. Things like screed heat, washdown system activation, screed vibration, and tamper system adjustments can all be activated with short-cut keys from the main display screen. The single touch activation features (auto-fill feeder system, feeder system activation, one-touch hopper control, cleanout mode, and mix-height adjustment) can all be managed easily from the console.

Cat screeds are very robust, they utilize a dual-cylinder, dual-carriage symmetrical design that provides great stability for wide-width paving and thick lift applications. The tamper bar and deflector profiles help deliver smooth flow. The screed deck has aluminium tread-bar covers that provide an appealing look while also keeping material out of the internal parts.

From an operator’s perspective, the low-profile extender design provides good visibility to the auger chamber and head of material. When starting out in urban areas, the high clearance walkway enables close work next to curbs and limits handwork.

To help deliver smooth mats, the Cat Grade Control option is another great feature. The system is very easy to setup, simply set your target depth through the touchscreen display, bench the system, activate automatic mode and you’re ready to pave. The optional Pave Start Assistant (SE50VT Screed only) saves set-up profiles for repeatable use on future job sites making automatic adjustment of tow-point height, screed heat temperature setting, paving speed, width, depth and crown.

    October 26, 2023
In the world of road maintenance and paving, as well as construction, the issue of recovering material deriving from demolition and scarification is becoming increasingly urgent, with the dual objective of combining environmental protection with economic savings. Those who work in the sector are well aware of the huge costs of transporting and disposing of asphalt and material from demolition, as well as the costs for the purchase and transport of new raw materials to the site. Now, as never before, the sector features its own circular economy, particularly in regards to bituminous conglomerates: road paving can be recycled several times, in full compliance with the regulations in force.
