Ammann’s electric asphalt paving innovations offer upgraded performance levels

Ammann is offering a new range of asphalt pavers, with its electric machine being the star performer

Ammann is offering a new range of pavers, with its all-electric eABG4820 model taking centre stage. Also new is the ABG5420 paver, which benefits from a series of performance upgrades while retaining the firm’s highly effective screed design.

The electric paver has many similarities with its diesel sister, the ABG 4820, a 2.5m-wide paver that can accommodate a screed length of up to 6.5m. It looks the same, has the same screed, the same user interface – Electric Pavement Management 3 (EPM3) - and the same street-level control panels at either side. However, it weighs in at around one tonne heavier.

Internally, there are huge differences: “We took out the diesel engine and whole drive system and added two electric motors to give good and efficient power balancing,” explains Hans-Juergen Vogel, product manager at Ammann. “Also, we have made tweaks to the hydraulic system so that it will work well with the two motors. The machine software, everything that relates to the control of the machine, is also new.”

The eABG4820 also benefits from tried and tested electronic components developed by Volvo Penta for its electric construction plant, with the firm supplying these components to Ammann in a partnership deal.

US and European asphalt paving needs are different, but some firms are bridging that gap, reports Mike Woof. With a clear differentiation between the US and European asphalt paving markets, manufacturers from the latter are now developing machines aimed at the former. The US and European markets for paving machines have developed along very different lines. North American pavers are designed for high throughputs and high paving rates, having been designed to meet a need to build roads over long distances wi

Asphalt paver manufacturers are introducing new models, many of which are aimed at specific market needs – Mike Woof writes A range of new asphalt paver models are coming to market, with some having been developed specifically for certain markets. China’s demand for construction equipment has resulted in numerous firms developing machines just for this market for example. Customers in China have long favoured the European-style machines, featuring tamper bar screeds, over the machines with vibrating

Some of the key manufacturers are improving asphalt paving technology with key developments to machines as well as the electronics and telematics systems fitted – Mike Woof writes. Several of the major asphalt paver manufacturers have unveiled new machines and systems that can optimise operations. Improved operating features for the BOMAG BF 800 C-2 paver are said to help increase its output and efficiency when working on-site. An important development is the new traffic light system, which helps improve co
