Accurate density measurement from HAMM

HAMM’s innovative density-measurement system makes compaction more efficient

The innovative Smart Compact Pro system developed by HAMM can measure density in real time as the asphalt compactor is operating. This revolutionary technology can help boost compaction productivity and quality. It ensures that there is none of the over-compaction that leads to increased fuel consumption and time worked. It also ensures that the mat meets required density specifications, boosting quality, without risking potential crushing of the aggregate.

Crucially, this gives the mat density reading in real time. Results can be checked with a Troxler nuclear gauge for conventional working but HAMM believes that this new system will minimise the need for coring in the future, reducing costs for road construction operations. The unit can be calibrated using a Troxler system and is then ready for use.

The system can also be used alongside the firm’s existing mapping tools, boosting the quality of data collection from road construction operations.

The technology is of key importance for delivering efficient, high quality compaction according to Dr Volker Knickel, CEO of the Wirtgen Group, “The holy grail is to measure density.”

HAMM is offering an innovative compaction crushing concept to construction customers - Mike Woof writes HAMM has put its novel crusher drum compactor system in series production. This is based on soil compactor technology, with the key feature being the innovative detachable tools. The idea behind the concept is that a large single drum roller can be used both for crushing and compacting rock. HAMM first unveiled its prototype in 2013 but has been developing and improving the system in a series of trials

Real time information on asphalt density and uniformity can boost construction quality - *Roger Roberts, GSSI. Properly compacted asphalt is a major factor in the lifespan of a road, as inadequately compacted asphalt deteriorates at a more rapid rate than properly compacted material. With the billions spent on road construction and repairs each year, it has become a matter of urgency to find new technologies that can ensure the integrity of asphalt on newly paved roads.
