783 Volvo Penta says it is ready for a follow-up of the new Tier 4 Final engine range and for displaying engine features such as the start/stop function, the latest Volvo Penta innovation that will “help operators to significantly reduce their fuel costs.”

Volvo Penta introduced its range of engines compliant with Tier 4 Interim/Stage 3B, all based on the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology in Janaury 2011, and while they were well received by the market, the off-road equipment industry was aware that within less than three years they had to go from the Interim stage to the Final stage, a substantial 80% reduction of the NOx – from 2.0 g/kWh to 0.4 g/kWh,” says Volvo Penta.

“They were also facing the additional challenge of re-designing their machines for installing new engines and after-treatment systems from their suppliers.”

To meet the new, stringent emission requirements of Tier 4 Final, and using the SCR technology, Volvo Penta says its new Tier 4 Final engine range will meet customers’ primary objectives: no re-generation, limited installation challenges, continuous optimised fuel consumption and low operating costs. With as few and as simple changes as possible.

The company says the “light” EGR [exhaust gas recirculation] system added to the engines has provided further emission reduction.

“It will, at the same time, help keep the SCR catalyst operating at an optimal temperature. By avoiding a costly Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), installation is greatly simplified,” says the company.

The Volvo Penta Tier 4 Final engine range for off-road applications consists of five basic engines, which will be on display at 688 Bauma 2013, and will be ready for delivery in 2014 although Volvo Penta says they are ready for the OEMs’ drawing-boards.

Volvo Penta will also introduce the new, automatic start/stop function for industrial equipment, which turns off an idling engine after a pre-set time span, and when the driver activates any machine control the engine starts immediately and the work can continue.

For the mining industry Volvo Penta has a new range of engines approved for underground mining applications: nine Tier 2 engines and nine Tier 4i engines.

Komatsu has unveiled its 23,590kg operating weight WA470-7 wheel loader, which offers improved efficiency, lower fuel consumption, improved operator comfort and enhanced serviceability. It is powered by a 203kW Stage IIIB/ EPA Tier 4I Komatsu SAA6D125E-6 engine, which is said to lower fuel consumption by 10% to 15% compared with the WA470-6. The engine is fitted with EGR, a hydraulically-actuated variable geometry turbocharger, and an automatically regenerating DPF. As with all Komatsu Stage IIIB machines,
