2394 Volvo Construction Equipment has begun the first phase of the US$100million expansion of its site in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.

The initial works include the construction of a new America’s HQ office and demonstration centre. Incorporating the latest environmental building practices, the expansion is said by Volvo CE to be a visible sign of the company’s commitment to the North American market.

The completed facility will also localise production of some of Volvo CE’s larger construction machines. These are set to include the new series of wheeled loaders, the L60G, L70G and L90G. The factory could eventually produce 70% of Volvo CE machines sold in North America.

President of Sales Region Americas Göran Lindgren said it was an exciting time for everyone involved: “This groundbreaking symbolises Volvo CE’s commitment to North America and indeed to the whole Americas region,” said Lindgren. “The investment will increase the company’s flexibility and agility, enabling us to meet customer demands faster.”

The new America’s HQ building will be 36,000sq.ft, consisting of two floors and a ‘bridge’ that will connect the new building with existing facilities. The new HQ office is expected to be ready for occupation by the beginning of 2013.

The Shippensburg facility employs over 800 people and makes over 50 different models of asphalt pavers, soil and asphalt compactors, milling machines and motor graders. This figure is set to rise to around 70 models by 2015.
