US $1.2bn Zhoukou-Zhengzhou, China highway construction begins

Work has begun on constructing a US $ 1.2 billion 144km highway between Zhengzhou and Zhoukou in China. The highway has a designed speed of 120km/hour and a width of 28m.
The Ethiopian Roads Authority has awarded a contract worth at least US$149.77 million (ETB 2.8bn) for a road upgrade to two China-based firms, with works due to be wrapped up in 36 months. Under the deal, the two companies are to upgrade a 133km road between the districts of Mille and Kombolcha from gravel to asphalt-concrete roads. Money for the works is being sourced from a loan extended by the World Bank.
The authorities in China's Shanxi Province are investing heavily in highway expansion. By the end of 2012, the total highway/expressway network Shanxi Province will be some 5,000km. This will cost some US$15.85 billion for expressway construction during the year. A total of 23 expressway projects totalling 1,600km will be constructed during 2012. By the end of 2015, the total expressway distance in Shanxi Province should reach some 6,300km, from 4,000km in 2011.
Plans are in hand for a US$616.6 million highway project in Yibin, China. China Roads, Xingtai Road and Bridge Construction and Sichuan Yibin Yili Group have signed concession and investment agreements for the Yibin-Yiliang and Yibin highways with the authorities in the city of Yibin. Work will commence before the end of this year on the western section of the 39km Yibin boundary-crossing highway. The project is expected to take three years to complete.
