Turkish joint venture Mapa Insaat Ve Ticaret and Cengiz Insaat Sanayi Ve Ticaret has won a construction contract for a section of the Sibiu-Pitesti Highway.

The €859.45 million deals covers the 31.33km between Boita and Cornetu with completion set for 2027. Work will include building 49 viaducts and bridges and seven tunnels spanning between 250m and 1,590m in length.

In the first stage of the bidding procedure, last July, 11 bidders lined up, noted Romania’s public roads authority CNAIR. Six were then shortlisted.

But in October, Romanian media reported that out of the six construction companies or consortia qualified in the competitive selection procedure for the most challenging section of the Sibiu-Pitesti motorway, only the joint venture of Mapa and Cengiz had submitted an offer by the late October deadline.

Last June, work started on the 30km Pitesti-Curtea de Arges stretch of Romania’s A1 motorway, part of the Pan-European Corridor 4.

The latest A1 project - part of Romania’s larger 122km Sibiu-Pitesti motorway - includes construction of 13 bridges, a viaduct, three passages, three junctions, two services areas, two road maintenance centres and two short-term car parks.
