Turkey’s dangerous roads result in frequent crashes

Turkey’s poor road safety is seeing the country suffer from a high crash rate. There were 307,000 crashes in the first nine months of 2017 in Turkey. These saw 2,700 deaths and 232,000 serious injuries. Over the last four years there were 4 million crashes in Turkey, resulting in 21,000 deaths and 674,000 serious injuries. The data comes from Turkey's General Directorate of Security.

According to data from the country’s National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), there was a reduction in road crashes to 2,349 incidents by the end of July 2017, a fall of 16.5% from the 2,814 recorded in the same period in 2016.     The US is making only slow progress with regard to road safety. During 2017 there were 40,100 road deaths, according to the National Safety Council. This is the second year that deaths from motor vehicle crashes have topped 40,000. There has been a slight improvement for 2017 from 2016 with road deaths dropping 1%. However 2016 was a poor year for road safety, with a 6% gain in road deaths over 2015. This means that the figures for 2017 represent a 6% increase in road deaths from two years before in 2015.
