The authorities in the Russian city of St Petersburg plan to invest heavily in transport infrastructure. A budget of US$59.24 billion in all has been projected for the necessary work. Final approval has to be given for the budget at this stage.
New transport infrastructure in Russia will be created from a US$4.178 billion (RUB 130bn) federal budget pot for boosting transport, energy supply, communications, utilities, and safety infrastructure ahead of the country hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Meanwhile, a further US$3.857 billion (RUB 120bn) is to be spent on the reconstruction of sport facilities ahead of the international football showpiece event. Nearly a third of Sri Lanka’s new US$11.5 billion transport master plan will be spent on road development in and around the capital Colombo.
The plan, unveiled by the Western Region Megapolis Planning Project (WRMPP) – covers the next 20 years. Work will start on the first projects withinsix month, according to a report by the Daily Mirror newspaper.
The other two-thirds will be spent on a light rail transit system, railway electrification, bus modernisation and inland waterways.
