The authorities in the Russian city of St Petersburg plan to invest heavily in transport infrastructure. A budget of US$59.24 billion in all has been projected for the necessary work. Final approval has to be given for the budget at this stage.
The first stage of a controversial Russian bridge project is now complete, with the link opening to use by cars. The Kerch Strait bridge spans the Black Sea, connecting Russia’s Taman Peninsula in Krasnodar with Crimea, the latter having been controversially annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014. The official opening of the 19km-long bridge was carried out by Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, who drove across the link in a Kamaz truck to reach the city of Kerch. New road, bridge and tunnel links are planned for the Chinese city of Wuhan. The city’s authorities have been discussing a series of projects with China Communications Construction Company, which are intended to improve transport connections and cut congestion and travelling times. Russia looks set to accelerate its road building programme – Eugene Gerden writes The volume of road building in Russia should be doubled by 2022, according to a recent order of Russia’s president Vladimir Putin. He said, “We need a real breakthrough in road building during the next several years. These volumes should be doubled during the coming decade.”
Tensar International is building a manufacturing plant in Russia. Tensar is the majority shareholder in the joint venture, with remaining investment coming from Russian partners. Don Meltzer, chief executive of US parent company, Tensar Corporation; and Bob Vevoda, chief operating officer and president of Tensar International; met with their Russian JV partners in London earlier this month to finalise the funding and construction schedule.
