The authorities in the Russian city of St Petersburg plan to invest heavily in transport infrastructure. A budget of US$59.24 billion in all has been projected for the necessary work. Final approval has to be given for the budget at this stage.
Russia is looking to boost road safety through a combination of upgrades to existing infrastructure and revised standards. The aim is to cut crashes through targeting known hotspots for incidents. The programme will also tackle congestion in key areas. Data is being collated on the sections of road suffering the highst numbers of crashes and most serious congestion, so that these sections can be prioritised for improvements.
Russia is setting out its plans for 14 major highway projects. A budget of US$1 billion has been set by the Federal Road Agency, Rosavtodor, for the work, which will involve building some 220km of highways in total. A new bridge is being built to connect Serny Island in St Petersburg. The bridge will feature three lanes of traffic in either direction, as well as pedestrian and cycling facilities. The bridge pylons have been constructed and the cable stays are being installed. The work is costing US$150.4 million.
