Tartu, Estonia’s second largest city, has started reconstruction of the busy Riia-Vaksali intersection with an emphais on cycle lanes and pedestrian paths.

Cycle and pedestrian tunnels will be built through the embankment of the railway on both sides of Riia Street. A cycle and pedestrian bridge will be built next to the railway viaduct crossing the road.

“The tunnels and the cycle and pedestrian viaduct will make crossing the railway and intersection safer and will [help] cycle and pedestrian track users travelling from the city centre to Maarjamõisa and Tammelinn,” said Urmas Klaas, mayor of Tartu.

City officials said design and construction of the intersection will cost nearlyi €5.3 million with completion in early 2022. Financing is coming from the city as well as the European Union’s Cohesion Fund for infrastructure projects.

Design work was done by Tartu-based civil engineering consultancy Tinter-Projekt OÜ with construction being done by TREV-2 Grupp, based in the capital city Tallinn.
