The Austrian group 945 Strabag has been awarded a two-year contract worth €34.6mn for the modernisation of a 48km stretch of the national road M2 in the Republic of Moldova. The upgrade route runs between Ghindesti and Drochia.
The contract for the second drive for the Karavanke tunnel connecting Slovenia with Austria is now once more being tendered. The project was awarded earlier this year to the Turkish contractor, Cengiz Insaat Sanayi Ve Ticaret. However this deal was then annulled and the firm prevented from reapplying. The Turkish company had submitted a bid of €89.3 million for the work. However this had to be rejected as the actual estimate to build the link sets a pricetag of some €121.5 million. The Transport Department of the State of Virginia in the US plans to cancel a contract worth an estimated US$1.12 billion for road construction awarded to Spanish firm Ferrovial.
The deal ends 15 June and the two parties are negotiating compensation terms for Ferrovial which won the contract in October 2012 for US-460. . Work was to begin in 2014 and finish in 2018 but no construction has taken place.
