St Petersburg sets ring road strategy

Discussions are being held in St Petersburg over the route for the city's new second ring road project.

Discussions are being held in St Petersburg over the route for the city's new second ring road project. A preliminary route should be ready by late May 2011. The Coordination Council for development of the transport system of St Petersburg and Leningrad region is oversee construction of the second ring road (KAD-2). The construction schedule has yet to be revealed however, although it is expected that the road will be ready to carry traffic by 2020. Financing for the project has yet to be revealed and the road may be tolled, although private funding sources may also be used.

    Moscow’s ring road is due for rebuilding – Eugene Gerden writes. The Moscow city authorities have finalised the project of the reconstruction of the Moscow Ring Road. The ring road encircles the City of Moscow and the plan was announced by Marat Khusnullin, deputy mayor of the city. Khusnullin said that, to date, the Moscow city government has completed 90% of the design documentation of the project.

    A LEGAL dispute is now underway in Russia over the St Petersburg ring road project. Construction company Flora was awarded a €187.6 million contract for an 11km section of the ring road in 2008, winning the tender by making the lowest bid. However, the Russian authorities have taken the contract for this section of the ring road away from Flora claiming it did not meet set targets. Flora is disputing the loss of the contract with the authorities.

    Major cost reductions are being seen on some key highway projects in Russia including the new ring road project in St Petersburg, where the reduction is US$192.31 million. The management of the ring road in St Petersburg has signed an agreement with the main contractors (Flora, the corporation Inzhtransstroy) to cut costs by 12-17.6% in 2009-2010.
