St Petersburg sets ring road strategy

Discussions are being held in St Petersburg over the route for the city's new second ring road project.

Discussions are being held in St Petersburg over the route for the city's new second ring road project. A preliminary route should be ready by late May 2011. The Coordination Council for development of the transport system of St Petersburg and Leningrad region is oversee construction of the second ring road (KAD-2). The construction schedule has yet to be revealed however, although it is expected that the road will be ready to carry traffic by 2020. Financing for the project has yet to be revealed and the road may be tolled, although private funding sources may also be used.

    Repair work is now planned on the first section of the St Petersburg ring road. The work will be carried out from Gorskaya to Primorskoe in 2013. Design work is underway at present. The 24km road will be widened to six lanes and the road structure will be revamped. The repair will end in 2015 and will cost some US$373 million. Work on the interchange in Bronka will commence in 2013 as well.

The construction project was handled by Transcity, formed by Spanish contractor firm Acciona along with BMD Constructions and Ghella. This is the first major project in Australia with which Acciona has been directly involved. The project was awarded in 2010 and cost in the region of US$1.64 billion to construct. This move is being made due to changes in terms and costs for the project, which is for the construction of a new road tunnel under the city that is intended to alleviate congestion.
