Speed checks for Europe

Police forces right across Europe will be working together to enforce speed limits during this week. A 24 hour blitz on speeding will be carried out from 0600 on Thursday 21st April to 0600 on Friday 22nd April. The 24-hour initiative forms part of TISPOL’s week-long speed enforcement operation, running until Sunday 24th April. Police forces right across Europe will be working together to enforce speed limits during this week. A 24 hour blitz on speeding will be carried out from 0600 on Thursday 21st April to 0600 on Friday 22nd April. The 24-hour initiative forms part of 4753 TISPOL’s week-long speed enforcement operation, running until Sunday 24th April.

The Speed Marathon concept was initially established two years ago in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. TISPOL President Aidan Reid comments: “Our forthcoming speed enforcement activity is all about prevention. We want drivers to think about the speeds they choose; speeds which are both legal and appropriate for the conditions. By doing so, they will be reducing the risks they face and the risks they pose to other road users.

Close to 1.2 million breath tests were carried out as part of this recent European operation. Police forces achieved 1,168,631 roadside breath tests for alcohol, of which 18,391 were positive.   • European police group TISPOL committed to helping cut road deaths

    In its latest three-year strategic plan, the European Traffic Police Network has reaffirmed its commitment to the European Union’s road death reduction target of 50% by 2020.     A series of controls to enforce drink driving and drug driving regulations across Europe saw police conduct more than 900,000 breath tests in a seven-day period, of which nearly 18,000 were positive. Motorists were also checked for drugs in the operation, organised by the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL), between 4 and 10 June. In total, 928,863 drivers were controlled. There were 17,970 alcohol offences and 2,773 drug offences detected.
