Spanish road safety gain

New data from Spain reveals an improvement in road safety. According to the latest official data, road fatalities fell by 2% during summer 2015. The data came from Spain's traffic authority, DGT. This shows 225 people have died in traffic crashes in Spain during the summer months of 2015, which is 2% more than in the same period of 2014. But figures for the first eight months of the year, however, show a 2% decrease in fatalities, which have totalled 727.

    The Spanish government may launch a state-owned motorway operator as part of a plan to solve the economic difficulties that nine operators are currently undergoing. As part of the plan, the operators' will see their debt to banks reduced from €3.6 billion.     The US is making only slow progress with regard to road safety. During 2017 there were 40,100 road deaths, according to the National Safety Council. This is the second year that deaths from motor vehicle crashes have topped 40,000. There has been a slight improvement for 2017 from 2016 with road deaths dropping 1%. However 2016 was a poor year for road safety, with a 6% gain in road deaths over 2015. This means that the figures for 2017 represent a 6% increase in road deaths from two years before in 2015.
