Plans are now well in hand for the upcoming 332 Smopyc construction equipment exhibition, which is being held in Zaragoza in Spain in May and several key improvements have been made for the show. This will be the 15th edition of the SMOPYC event, which be held at the Zaragoza Trade Fair Centre from 5th – 9th April 2011. The organisers are developing the international presence of the event and have made major upgrades, including substantial improvements to facilities and services. The SMOPYC Steering Committee is hopeful of further growth in exhibitors and attendance over the previous edition in 2008, which attracted over 100,000 attendees and 2,014 exhibitors to its total exhibition space of 400,000 m2.

The attendance figures for the last event hit record levels and the show is said to be important for accessing the markets of Europe, South America, Africa, the Mediterranean Arc and Asia. This year’s SMOPYC show will continue with the successful concept of featuring live machine demonstrations in the outdoor areas, with 27.15% of the exhibitors belonging to the earth moving and road construction sector. The organisers also want to build on the strength of the previous event, where over 90% of the exhibitors expressed an intention to participate in 2011. Of those exhibitors, 85% said that they achieved their objectives, while 92% felt the level of professional visitors to be of high quality and 75% of the exhibitors established additional international contacts.

A key development for SMOPYC 2011 is the Technological Innovation Awards scheme, which offers rewards and recognition to the research and development work of innovating companies. Another key development for SMOPYC 2011 is a new programme of interviews for exhibitors at SMOPYC 2011. This programme is being organised under the auspices of the 3492 Enterprise Europe Network, in co-operation with CREA (Employers Confederation of Aragón), which belongs to the Spanish Confederation of Employers Organisations (CEOE) and is approved by the 1116 European Union (Enterprise and Industry-2465 European Commission). It will provide some 800 interviews in all. In addition, there is an international enterprise visit plan to coordinate the participation of international companies through the Spanish Manufacturers Association of Construction and Mining Equipment (ANMOPYC).

To raise the international profile, the Zaragoza Trade Fair Centre is inviting three emerging, strategic markets for the public works and construction sector worldwide: North Africa, Asia and South America and is introducing its Guest Country initiative. Algeria has been put forward as guest country due to the rapid expansion of the country’s highway sector and its massive growth in construction. Finally, with for international promotion of the event the organisers are putting particular attention on Morocco, Algeria, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Mexico. SMOPYC 2011 will benefit from the support of the main associations, which will also organise different business meetings, conferences and work seminars during the course of the Show.

Initiatives are underway to maximise access to the grounds of the Zaragoza Trade Fair Center. The first is the establishment of a special entrance and exit security unit, which will work in coordination with the Guardia Civil, a proven system used successfully at the FIMA 2010 event. In addition, there will be enhancements to the exhibitor car park, which will have independent access for both pedestrians and vehicles. Improvements will also be made to signposting in the visitor car park in order to facilitate vehicle location. Meanwhile there will also be discounted train travel available from both Barcelona and Madrid.
