Slight increase in German road casualties

Germany recorded an increase in the numbers of traffic fatalities in 2014. Data revealed by the German federal statistical office, Destatis, shows that 3,368 people were killed in crashes on German roads in 2014. Provisional figures show that this was an increase of 29 deaths (0.9% compared) with 2013. In all, however, it was the second-lowest number of people killed in the course of a year since 1950. The numbers of those seriously or slightly injured rose by 4% in 2014 from 2013 to approximately 389,000.

    New data from Germany and Portugal reveals continued improvement in road safety, with a reduction in fatality levels for both countries. Final figures from the German Federal Statistics Office, Destatis, reveal a reduction in road related deaths for 2012. Some 3,600 people died on Germany’s roads in 2012, a 10.2% drop from the previous year.     A very different road safety picture is emerging in two European nations, France and Germany. In France, the road fatality rate fell 4.7% for the month of June 2012, compared with the same period in the previous year. Some 320 people were killed on French roads in June 2012. In May 2012, the road death rate in France was only 0.9% lower than for the same period in the previous year. But in April 2012 the road death rate dropped 22.2% compared with 2011, 9% in March and 25.3% in February.

    The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), Britain’s largest independent road safety charity, has welcomed new UK Department for Transport (DfT) road casualty figures showing a fall in the amount of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents. The DfT reports there were 1, 680 people killed in the year ending March 2013, 10% reduction from 1, 870 in the year ending March 2012.
