Siberian highway rebuild

A budget of close to US$11 billion is being set aside to rebuild the Elantsy-Khuzhir highway in Siberia.

A budget of close to US$11 billion is being set aside to rebuild the Elantsy-Khuzhir highway in Siberia. The section in Olkhon district will be rebuilt first. Other stretches requiring reconstruction include the Irkutsk-Kachug-Zakhal section in the Ekhirit-Bulagat district and Pivovarikha-Novolisikha in the Irkutsk district.

    Some US$189.2 million is being budgeted by the authorities for 2013 in the Irkutsk Region of Siberia for road repairs and maintenance, as well as new construction. This represents an increase of 12% from the 2012 budget. Key improvements include replacing gravel on federal highways and also building bypasses around some of the major urban areas in the region.

    The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) intends to provide a US$277 million (€200 million) loan to the Northern Capital Highway consortium, which will build the central 11.5km section of St Petersburg’s Western High Speed Diameter (WHSD) route.     The authorities have set out plans for significant investment in Siberia’s roads. Some US$818.85 million has been earmarked for investment in developing roads in the Irkutsk region by 2030.
