Construction will start in the summer of 2013 on the initial project to put a ‘lid’ over Interstate 70, near the grounds of the Arch. The Leonor K Sullivan Boulevard, the riverfront road runs along the Mississippi River in front of the Gateway Arch, is being raised by around 0.76m. It will also be redesigned to include pedestrian and bicycle paths. Engineers working on the project's lid element, costing around $47mn, have found an estimated $11 million in savings. These savings are said to have hastened the second project: the redevelopment of the boulevard. Construction on this latter project is expected to commence in March 2014.

Plans are in hand in Canada to extend Highway 427 by 6.6km. The final decision over the project has yet to be made by the Ontario Government. The work is expected to cost in the region of C$500 million (US$491 million) to carry out. The work is required as the highway carries a heavy traffic volume and the extension will help reduce congestion in the surrounding area. The work should commence in 2017 once the necessary approvals have been given and the construction would then require an estimated 36 months.
