SANY is appointing a new head for global crawler crane development.

John Lanning, 6901 Sany America’s research and development director for crawler cranes, has now been promoted to worldwide director of engineering and development for 1170 Sany crawler cranes. Liang Wengen, chairman of SANY Group, appointed Lanning to this key role of directing SANY’s crawler crane product development. The new post carries with it two titles, including deputy general manager of SANY Heavy Industry. His main duties will be as director of the R&D Institute of SANY Zhejiang Equipment, based in Huzhou. SANY is at present moving its global crawler crane manufacturing and development operations to Huzhou. The company was previously known as SANY Science & Technology. Lanning’s duties will also include product development for the domestic Chinese market and global markets. However Lanning will continue developing crawler cranes for North American customers.

Lanning joined SANY America in January 2010 after four decades at Manitowoc, P&H and Link-Belt. He directed design of the 330tonne SANY SCC8300, the company’s first self-assembling crawler crane, and the new 550tonne SCC8500 with its movable counterweight and automatic counterbalance equalisation system.

Among SANY’s recent crawler crane innovations is the UltraCab, the new operator station designed by 3489 Porsche Design Studios. The UltraCab features high visibility and can rotate upward by 20°. Under Lanning’s direction, SANY’s 8000 Series cranes were developed for the global crane market, especially for the needs of North American customers.

SANY America’s crawler crane line ranges from the 110tonne SCC8100 to the 550tonne SCC8500. Globally, the SANY crane line ranges from 50tonnes to one of the world’s most powerful cranes, the 3,600tonne SCC36000.
