RSSCity CarShare, a non-profit organisation, in collaboration with the 5255 San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), will implement the city’s first on-street car sharing demonstration and research project as part of a six-month pilot programme. Eleven on-street parking spaces will be implemented.

“The pilot is designed to help us learn what works, what doesn’t and what is needed to expand on-street car sharing to serve the local community,” says Rick Hutchinson, CEO of City CarShare. “We know that when car sharing is more visible and easily accessible, neighbourhoods benefit as congestion decreases and local residents and employees walk, cycle and take public transportation more often.”

According to the company, its members save up to US$700 per month over the cost of owning a car. Along with City CarShare’s 180 other neighbourhood locations across the Bay Area, the new on-street spaces in San Francisco will support a reduction in parking demand and traffic congestion, and will make car sharing an attractive alternative to individual car ownership.
