SaMoTer Lab, a major new innovation exhibition area within Italy’s SaMoTer construction equipment show, will highlight smart technologies including sensors to boost on-site performance.

SaMoTer Lab will enjoy excellent visibility during SaMoTer, the Italian construction equipment show that will take place at the Veronafiere exhibition centre in Verona from 3-7 May, 2023. The Lab will be situated in the heart of the SaMoTer exhibition - the new Hall 12, opposite the main Re Teodorico entrance to the fair. Visitors wishing to reach other show halls will be passing through the Lab.

The theme for the new area will focus on the current state and future development of Construction 4.0 solutions and technologies. Among the many companies committed to Construction 4.0 – and which were consulted by the event organisers – are Bosch Rexroth, Cobo Group, Kiwitron, Ifm electronic, Leica Geosystems, S.A.E.T., Spektra (a Trimble company), Spring Machine Control, Moba Electronic, Topcon Positioning Italy and W.A.Y.

"Digitisation and de-carbonisation are the keywords characterising the new format, not to mention economic sustainability, safety and training,” said Sara Quotti Tubi, manager for the area within the venue. “SaMoTer Lab is open to all companies in the construction sector keen to bring innovation and content along to the trade fair and promote discussion."

"The construction machinery sector is being overtaken by a massive wave of technological innovation and a focal point enhancing the extent of this change will be extremely useful,” said Luca Nutarelli, secretary general of Unacea, the Italian Construction Equipment Association which represents Italy’s manufacturing and commercial sector with a turnover of €3.5 billion and a workforce of around 50 thousand. Unacea represents the Italian industry within the CECE, the European federation for the sector.

Why highlight Construction 4.0 and what does it mean?

The term Industry 4.0 was first coined by the German government in 2011 to highlight what is called the fourth industrial revolution that is driven by the digitisation of manufacturing. As such, according to the European Industry Construction Federation (FIEC), the main goal of Construction 4.0 is to create a digital construction site that monitors progress throughout the lifecycle of a project by using different technologies.

Among the technologies under the umbrella of Construction 4.0 are iBIM (integrated building information modelling), augmented reality, virtual reality, robotics, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, drones, IoT (Internet of Things) and Big Data (the processing of large amounts of data that is used for predictive modelling).

In recognition of the construction sector’s progress towards Construction 4.0, the SaMoTer Lab initiative is linked with the Innovation Award, a technical innovation competition that rewards investments in research and innovation by companies in the sector. Following the awards’ prize-giving ceremony on 23 February, the award-winning solutions and technologies will be highlighted throughout the SaMoTer event.
