Russia's Krasnodar region plans to invest heavily in road building projects.

Russia's Krasnodar region plans to invest heavily in road building projects. Some US$178.7 million has been allocated so far, with concrete roads looking likely to constitute a major portion of the work. Meanwhile Russia's North Caucasian federal district has plans in hand to rebuild over 200 highways. Full details of the roads being improved have yet to be revealed, along with the size of the budget required.

    The Russian highway authorities intend to invest a massive €16.78 billion (US$24.23 billion) in road construction and repairs during 2011. This investment will come from federal and regional budgets and represents a 40% increase over spending made in 2010. The plans involve repairs to 5,500km of road surface at a cost of €2.11 billion ($3.046 billion).

  • Controversial Russian bridge opens

    The first stage of a controversial Russian bridge project is now complete, with the link having been opened to use by cars and buses. The Kerch Strait bridge spans the Black Sea, connecting Russia’s Taman Peninsula in Krasnodar with Crimea, the latter having been controversially annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014. The official opening of the 19km-long bridge was carried out by Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, who drove across the link in a Russian-manufactured Kamaz truck to reach the city of Kerch.
