Russia boosting maintenance

Around 10,000km of Russia’s roads will be repaired annually from 2014 according to the country’s Federal Highway Agency. The federal road network would fully meet quality requirements in Russia by late 2017. Currently, Russian authorities repair 6,600km per annum, around 1.5 times less than required. Only about 39% of the road network is said to be in a satisfactory condition.

    A new report highlights the poor conditions of Russia’s roads. The latest Global Competitiveness Report 2015-2016 shows that is in 123rd position worldwide in terms of road quality. The report is based on polls carried out from Russian businessmen and assessed the quality of local roads at 2.7 points on average on a scale from 1 - 7. However this ranking is an improvement on the previous report carried out in 2012, when Russia’s roads scored 136th worldwide for quality.

    In Russia a series of road projects planned to improve connections to Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport have been cut. The new roads connecting to Domodedovo Airport are required for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. But with Russia cutting its federal budget for road development, the projects have halted.
