Rural road revamp in China

The authorities in China's Shaanxi Province are working on a rural road improvement programme that will see existing links to outlying areas being upgraded and new transport connections being introduced. Some US$601 million has been budgeted for the work during 2010, with surfacing work being a key priority. In all Shaanxi Province aims to upgrade 10,000km of rural roads that connect to small communities and will also improve roads in the villages.

    Work is starting on an upgrade for a 100km stretch of road in Zambia. The route connects Nchelenge and Chiengi districts and will benefit from a new asphalt surface. The project is costing US$77 million and is being carried out by the contractor Sinohydro Zambia. Delays to the work have been caused by heavy rains however.     Ethiopia is set to benefit economically from investment in a number of new key road links totalling over US$1 billion. The east African nation’s 218km Modjo-Hassan highway is expected to cost US$720 million to construct. The highway will be constructed in two stages.
