Russia’s Ministry of Economic Development, Rusnano, the Federal Highway Agency, Governments of Moscow, the Tatarstan Republic (Volga), and the Ryazan region (Central) are planning to invest US$3.13 billion in a pilot project for innovative infrastructure projects. Around 10,000km of Russia’s roads will be repaired annually from 2014 according to Igor Astakhov, head of road operation and safety at the country’s Federal Highway Agency. Astakhov also said that the federal road network would fully meet quality requirements in Russia by late 2017. Currently, Russian authorities repair 6,600km per annum, around 1.5 times less than required. Only about 39% of the road network is said to be in a satisfactory condition.
Russia is looking to spend upwards of US$106 billion to improve motorways in Siberia, the Ural Mountains and central Asia by 2030.
A report by the Russian financial newspaper Kommersant said that the federal transport ministry and the Federal Road Transport Agency – Rosavtodor - have designed a strategy to build another 15,000km of toll motorways to add to the already 5,000km. Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service has cancelled the results of a tender for construction and maintenance of the fifth section of the central ring road in the Moscow.
The FAS made the announcement following an investigation based on a complaint from Stroygazconsulting, one of Russia’s largest infrastructure construction companies.
