A record number of more than 100 entries have been received this year - the 10th anniversary – for the ITA Tunnelling Awards this November.

There are seven categories and entries have come in from over 19 countries – yet another record, said the ITA, based in Châtelaine, Switzerland.

Projects for road, rail, metro, hydro, water and underground space, join entries for technical advancements, engineering initiatives and the ‘young engineers’ who are the future of the industry. They all celebrate the highest of achievements for 2024.

A panel of 20 judges, experienced in reviewing projects, will identify a short list of three finalists per category. From these, a second round of scoring will arrive at an overall winner for each category. Winners will be announced at a gala event in November and not even the judges will know the winners before the dinner.

This year the ITA teams up with SIG, the Italian Tunneling Society, to host the global awards event in conjunction with the SIG annual conference in the beautiful city of Genoa on Italy’s northwest Mediterranean coast. A day-long programme of roundtable discussions to know more about the ITA Awards categories and the finalists will be followed by a cocktail party to announce the winners and a seated Gala Dinner in full celebration.

The SIG conference the next day will celebrate the 50th anniversary of both the ITA and of SIG, Société Italiana Gallerie. There will be a programme to look back at underground works over the past five decades and look forward to project in the future. The event be topped by a technical site visit the following day to the Terzo Valico dei Giovi, the highspeed rail project - a 30-minute road trip from Genoa.

The venue for the awards day and dinner on November 28 is the historic Magazzini del Cotone, a 19th century port warehouse converted into beautifully decorated function rooms. The SIG Conference on November 29 will be in the equally historic Palazzo Ducale.

Hotels for the events are within five minutes walking distance. The field trip on Saturday November 30 is for the lucky ones who book their seats early.
