Puerto Rico assures road maintenance funds

A budget of US$304 million will be used for road maintenance and repairs in Puerto Rico during 2011.

A budget of US$304 million will be used for road maintenance and repairs in Puerto Rico during 2011. The Department of Transportation and Public Works in Puerto Rico (DTOP) said that the sum will be equally distributed between 33 municipalities throughout the island. In all, the DTOP has a recommended budget of $96.7 billion for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, which represents an increase of $3.69 billion over the previous year's budget.

The US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has provided a budget of US$135 million, which will be used to repair roads and bridges in Puerto Rico that were damaged by hurricane Maria. This budget should be sufficient to pay for 90% of the work needed. However the source of the remaining 10% of the infrastructure repair budget has yet to be announced.
