A new contract has been awarded in Poland to construct a 40km section of the A1 highway. This stretch of the highway will run from Strykow to the Tuszyn junction. The work is expected to cost €235.67 million and will be carried out by the 3305 Polimex-Mostostal consortium. The contract was awarded by Poland's General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (1361 GDDKiA).

The deal is of note as the A1 highway project has been subject to delays in the past. Concerns over environmental issues resulted in one section of the highway being redesigned and re-routed. Another section was subject to a legal battle between the contractor and the GDDKiA over delays and safety issues with regard to parts of the design. This was settled with the original contractor then being re-awarded the work.

Poland has long been criticised by the road construction industry, both within the country and in the rest of Europe, for handing out tender wins to the lowest bidder with scant regard for life-cycle costs.
