Plans in hand for Denmark-Germany tunnel link

The tender pre-selection process is underway for the new tunnel link that will connect Denmark with Germany. The tender pre-selection process is underway for the new tunnel link that will connect Denmark with Germany. Danish state-owned company 4782 Femern said that interest is strong in the project to build the tunnel, which will run under the Baltic Sea. So far nine consortia comprising 24 companies in all are taking part in the tender pre-selection process. The Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link will feature an immersed tunnel and its construction is expected to cost some €5.5 billion. There are four main contracts including dredging, construction of the northern and southern sections of the tunnel and the connections to the tunnel, such as ramps and portals. Interest so far has come in from firms in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Spain, and South Korea. The 1035 Danish Government hopes to finalise plans for the tunnel by 2014, while the German Government should approve the project by 2015.
