Police in a small German town were stumped when their speed trap camera went off clocking a vehicle doing 30kph in a 20kph zone.

The photo, taken on a clear day at 10am, showed no object, according to German media reports.

But on closer examination, police in the town of Zweibrücken, in the south west, spotted a tiny airborne object – a green ring-necked parakeet – in mid-flight.

“After close visual inspection of the photo taken at the scene we solved the puzzle,” the Rhineland Palatinate police said.

It was, apparently, the first offence by the birds which have made their homes in the local Rosengarten Park.

A would normally be given a warning fine of around €15. But is not likely the bird can be positively identified.

In the world of birds, a white-throated needle-tail – a large common swift - has been clocked at 169 kph in level flight. However, the record for the fastest speed in a dive is held by the peregrine falcon at 389 kph.

It’s that time of year again when city authorities in the Italian capital regularly close down some of the more clogged city streets. But it’s not cars that are the problem. It’s bird excrement, by the tonne, from starlings that migrate from northern Europe to live in Rome during the less brutal winter. Cleaners are out in force in the more affected areas where recent rainfall has made the streets dangerously slippery for motorcycle and mopeds. Meanwhile, sidewalks have become treacherous for pedestrians

Thankfully it doesn’t happen too often, but forgetting where you parked your car can be an embarrassing moment, or several days, as one man in the UK recently found. Jason Matthews, 40, ran the Manchester City Marathon on April 19 in five hours and 11 minutes and then spent an additional several hours looking for his Saab 93 Sport. He said he couldn’t recall where he had parked the vehicle. He walked back around some of the 26-mile – nearly 42km - course, before driving around in a taxi for 40 minutes an
