Nigeria road crashes – cause for concern

Nigeria’s dangerous roads remain a cause for concern. In the three month period to December 2017, there were 2,489 reported road crashes in Nigeria. These crashes accounted for 1,306 deaths and 7,349 injuries, according to data collated by Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Of those killed, 106 were children and 1,200 were adults. These crashes accounted for 1,306 deaths and 7,349 injuries, according to data collated by Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Of those killed, 106 were children and 1,200 were adults. Excessive speed was cited as a primary cause of 45.1% of the crashes. Other major factors in crashes were loss of control and dangerous driving. No estimates for the numbers of unreported crashes, injuries and road deaths have been given however. It is of note that in Nigeria’s more rural areas in particular, road crashes are not always reported to the police.

    The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), Britain’s largest independent road safety charity, has welcomed new UK Department for Transport (DfT) road casualty figures showing a fall in the amount of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents. The DfT reports there were 1, 680 people killed in the year ending March 2013, 10% reduction from 1, 870 in the year ending March 2012. The number of people killed or seriously injured also fell to 23, 660, a 6% decrease.
