Nigeria president Goodluck Jonathan will deliver the opening address at the 1st 713 International Road Federation Africa Regional Congress being held in Abuja on 4 June 2014.

Dr Jonathan has been Nigeria's head of state since 2010, having previously served as federal vice president, as well as governor of the state of Bayelsa.

Welcoming Dr Jonathan’s confirmation as opening address speaker, IRF president & CEO Patrick Sankey said, "President Jonathan's presence is an extraordinary honour for our industry. It is also recognition of the role a modern road network plays in Nigeria's development agenda and of the value of regional knowledge-sharing programs such as those offered by the IRF."

IRF Chairman Eng. Abdullah A. Al-Mogbel said sub-Saharan African economies "stand at a crossroads as they seek to address significant infrastructure and mobility challenges, chief among which a growing epidemic of road traffic injuries”. He added, “With this Congress, our goal is to help policy-makers, planners and infrastructure operators from across the region translate these challenges into planning and investment decisions."

The 1st IRF Africa Regional Congress runs June 4-6 2014 in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. During the three-day event, delegates will further their understanding on a range of industry best practices -- from safe road design to efficient highway asset management -- all designed to ensure the value of roads for society is maximized.
