New tolled highways planned for South Africa

The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) is planning the construction of a further five toll roads. A feasibility study is underway for the N12 route connecting Kimberley with Johannesburg, the Limpopo N1 Botlokwa Interchange, the N3 road from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, the N1 connecting Kroonstad to Winburg and a N1 ring road at Musina.

    Contractor STRABAG is to work on the project to build a new bridge connection in South Africa. This structure is of note as it will be Africa’s highest bridge at 223m high. The 1,132m long bridge will span the Mtentu River in eastern South Africa, close to the town of Flagstaff. The contract has a value of around €106 million and the construction work is expected to take 40 months to complete. The project is costing US$128.25 million and involves the construction of a 580m long suspension bridge.
