New Sunderland bridge

The UK city of Sunderland, north-east England, looks set to see construction of a landmark cable-stayed bridge across the River Wear. The structure will be England's tallest bridge and will measure 187m high by 336m long. It has been designed by architect Stephen Spence and the structural engineering company Techniker.

    It was as weekend working in Sunderland city, northeast England, for global lifting specialist 8569 Sarens.

    Over the two days, the Belgian company gently raised a 1,550tonne steel pylon that will form the backbone of the New Wear Crossing – no official name yet – across the River Wear.

    General work on the two-span cable-stay bridge started on the bridge in May 2015. The structure will be supported by the single double pylon and will have four vehicle lanes, as well as dedicated cycle and pedestrian routes.

    In the UK the Lanes Group is carrying out the contract to build specialist drainage for the New Wear Bridge in Sunderland. The Lanes Group will carry out this work for the joint venture partners building the new bridge link.

    Structural engineering company VSL International has installed all 28 cable stays of England’s New Wear Crossing and stressed them to 50% of their design load. The next stage of stressing the cables will happen next month and be to 100% of design load. This will allow the construction team to adjust and tension them just enough to lift the bridge deck off the blue steel temporary supports that were constructed in the river to take the weight of the structure.
