New highway connection under construction in Hong Kong

Construction work is underway on the Central-Wan Chai Bypass in Hong Kong, a major project that will help tackle chronic traffic congestion. Construction work is underway on the Central-Wan Chai Bypass in Hong Kong, a major project that will help tackle chronic traffic congestion. The Central-Wan Chai Bypass and Island Eastern Corridor Link is a section of the east-west route that runs along the north shore of Hong Kong Island. The project will help reduce traffic congestion along the Gloucester Road - Harcourt Road - Connaught Road Central corridor. The project is costing some US$3.62 billion (HK$28.1 billion) and the 4.5km long dual three-lane trunk road will include a 3.7km long tunnel. This will connect the Rumsey Street Flyover at Central with the Island Eastern Corridor at North Point near City Garden and is due for completion in 2017. The project includes the construction of road tunnels and elevated roads; associated slip roads and approach roads to the tunnels. It also includes installing electrical and mechanical systems and traffic control and surveillance technology. Other works include noise barriers, drainage and landscaping. Other projects underway in Hong Kong include the Tuen Mun Road reconstruction and improvement, the Tolo Highway widening and the HZM Bridge and related projects. In addition work in Hong Kong includes retrofitting of noise barriers at various locations, the Central Kowloon Route, the Tolo Highway widening Stage 2 and widening of the Gascoigne Road Flyover.
