New head for Pan-European police body TISPOL

Aidan Reid has succeeded Koen Ricour as TISPOL president. Aidan is the TISPOL council member for the Republic of Ireland, and head of the Garda National Traffic Bureau. Aidan Reid's appointment comes at a time when Ireland has achieved an overall reduction of 52% in road fatalities between 2005 and 2013. Aidan Reid has succeeded Koen Ricour as 4753 TISPOL president. Aidan is the TISPOL council member for the Republic of Ireland, and head of the Garda National Traffic Bureau. Aidan Reid's appointment comes at a time when Ireland has achieved an overall reduction of 52% in road fatalities between 2005 and 2013. Dublin has also achieved the safest roads of all EU capital cities. Chief Superintendent Reid graduated with an MSc (Hons) in Police Leadership from University College Dublin (UCD) in 2010. He holds an Advanced Diploma in Executive Leadership, having completed modules in the Smurfit Business School, UCD and the John F Kennedy School of Governance, Harvard, Cambridge, USA.

  • Improving safety for Europe’s roads revealed by latest data

    A wide variety of road safety measures are being implemented across Europe, and with generally beneficial effects. According to the latest data from the European Commission, road fatalities across the EU dropped 9% for 2012 compared with the previous year. In fact 2012 also saw the lowest numbers of people being killed in road traffic crashes in EU countries since data first began being collated. But country by country statistics show that the number of road deaths still varies greatly across the EU.

  • Europe’s day of road safety

    A day of road safety is planned for Europe this September, with the aim of having zero road fatalities. Called EDWARD, the first European day without road deaths is on Wednesday September 21st. The day is being organised by Pan-European police body TISPOL along with the European Commission and various other road safety bodies. It involves all 28 EC countries, as well as Norway and Switzerland and forms part of a plan to reduce road deaths in Europe. The target has been to halve road deaths in Europe by 2020
