A new bridge will improve cross border connections between Zambia and Botswana. The Kazungula Bridge will be constructed by Zambia, which will also build a new border post. Construction work is expected to commence once discussions between Zambia and Botswana have been completed. The Japanese Government is also involved in the discussions, as it is jointly funding the project in partnership with the 1586 African Development Bank (AfDB). Construction of the bridge is expected to cost in the region of US$200 million but the exact costs have yet to be quantified. The new border post will be constructed on the Zambian side of the bridge and is expected to cost some $35 million. The bridge is required to improve transport connections and trade for Southern Africa. Zambia’s copper mining and Botswana’s diamond mining industries are major sources of revenue for both nations and also require better transport connections for the southern African region.
