The new HM400-3 articulated dump truck (ADT) from 2300 Komatsu can carry a full 40 tonnes and features a host of new technology in the drivetrain and in the cab.

Its 353kW engine is fitted with a diesel particulate filter with computer-controlled regeneration so that no operator input is required.

A computerised Transmission Control System replaces the need for limited slip differentials in the transmission as it activates the multi wet disc foundation brakes in any wheel that starts to spin. Furthermore, the system is also used as a retarder and reduces the weight of the transmission.

An A frame design carries the front wheel and does away with the need for a solid front axle and improves the ride quality. Inside the cab are separate monitors for the machine control and rear view camera, while the tip control is now also fully electronic.

A redesigned 24m 3 body has thicker steel than its predecessor and is elevated by new single-stage rams, which cut the laden tipping time to 9seconds. When reverse is selected the angled rear view camera and lights are activated to provide a view from one tyre to the other and complement the large mirrors mounted by the cab.

Italian technology company Outset has introduced two additional on-board weighing systems. The Lanx WL is a wireless control unit designed for use on road-going tipper trucks. It provides a real-time display of the net, gross, trailer and tractor axle weights, with an acoustic alarm to prevent overloading. The Lanx HD is intended for use in rigid dump trucks, and is directly installed in the cab. It displays the weight on board, allowing readings for each axle, and memorise round-trips for later download.
