Tenders are now being placed for a €1 billion a contract to double the capacity of the A1/A6 highway in the Netherlands. This deal forms part of a €4.4 billion road plan. The contract will entail the construction of 18km of new motorway, eight connections with other roads and two service areas. Spanish concessions firm, 1377 Globalvia, and German construction firm, 981 Hochtief, are taking part in the tender. 2378 Macquarie, Vinci, 1378 John Laing, 945 Strabag, 7167 Meridiam and Mott McDonald have also shown an interest in taking part in the tender as well as financial firms, 3320 Credit Agricole, 3321 Deutsche Bank, 2621 China Development Bank and 3322 Societe Generale.

    Major highway projects are seeing progress in India. The US$1.52 billion Zojila Pass tunnel project is being planned in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The project has been awarded to local road development firm IRB Infrastructure Developers (IRB). The 14.08km tunnel is expected to take seven years to complete. The concession for the project is for 22 years. As part of the deal, IRB will oversee the construction of 10.8km of approach roads on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri Road in Jammu and Kashmir.

    Mexican construction company Empresas ICA has entered a partnership with Canadian investment company CDPQ to carry out joint road projects in Mexico. Under the arrangement, subject to Mexican government approval, ICA holds a 51% interest in the partnership and CDPQ will pay US$197.17 million to ICA for its 49% equity share of the new business.   • Mott MacDonald to design highway improvements in Czech Republic

    Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic to design sections of the R35 and R55 expressways. R35 connects the Bohemia and Moravia regions and runs parallel to the D1 motorway, the longest in the country. Mott MacDonald will design a 5.8km section of the expressway, including three bridges, two interchanges, two roundabouts, four overpasses and one railway viaduct.
