Engineering firm 2579 Mott MacDonald has been commissioned to head the team designing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge link road. The Dragages-China Harbour-VSL joint venture appointed Mott MacDonald as lead designer for the 9.4km long viaduct section of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. This US$1.66 (HK$12.9 billion) project is the largest single design and build contract ever awarded in Hong Kong. The bridge will carry a dual three-lane carriageway over the Pearl River Estuary, which is one of the world’s busiest shipping channels. The bridge will be constructed using the balanced cantilever method and will be formed from pre-stressed concrete box sections. Mott MacDonald is to design a substantial section of the viaduct, as well as being responsible overall for geotechnical, highways, electrical and mechanical, utilities, and other civil engineering services. Dr Mark Swales, Mott MacDonald’s transport division manager in Hong Kong said, “The project will enable us to showcase and draw upon our world-wide experience in the design of major bridges; it will be both challenging and rewarding for all.”

It utilises 33,500tonnes of structural steel in the bridge deck; 32,000m3 of concrete in the towers and 65 steel deck units relying on 224 cables. Effectively protecting the megastructure's deck from the weather extremes (monsoon rains and extreme heat in the summer) and the high levels of tra
