Massive highway project for Romania

The Romanian Transport Ministry has completed its plans for the Targu-Mures-Lasi highway, with final approval pending from the Romanian Government. The highway measures 289km long and is expected to take four years to construct and will cost some €8.71 billion in all.

The Romanian Transport Ministry has completed its plans for the Targu-Mures-Lasi highway, with final approval pending from the Romanian Government. The highway measures 289km long and is expected to take four years to construct and will cost some €8.71 billion in all. Because of its length the project has been divided into four separate sections: the 92km Targu Mures-Ditrau section; the 119km Ditrau-Targu Neamt stretch; the 78km Targu Neamt-Lasi section.

    The European Commission has approved €246 million towards construction of Romania’s Targu Mures-Campia Turzii section of the A 3motorway. The EC money for the 51km four-lane section is from the EC’s Cohesion Fund, according to a report by the Romania Journal. Bechtel was originally going to build most of the 603km A3 to connect Bucharest with the Transylvania region and the north-west part of the country. Work should have started by now but contractual issues with Bechtel hampered progress.
