Marginal gains seen in Japanese road safety data

Data from Japan’s National Police Agency reveals that 4,373 people were killed in crashes in 2013. This was a fall of 0.9% compared with the figures for 2012. The fall in road traffic deaths in 2013 is said to have come as a result of better traffic safety initiatives. The data revealed that 799,660 people were injured in crashes in 2013, while Japan saw a total of 628,248 crashes overall. There were 418 road deaths over the seven day festival period, held in April, an increase of 7% over the 390 fatalities recorded for the event in 2017. The Road Safety Centre's report said that the number of crashes during the seven day festival hit 3,724 for 2018, compared with 3,690 in 2017, while injuries grew to 3,897 in 2018 from 3,808 in 2017.

    An estimated 75,000 people aged 15-34 were killed in road crashes in India during 2014. This accounted for 53.8% of India’s total road crash fatalities for 2014, around 129,300 in all. The data comes from India’s 2014 Road Accident Report by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry. The report also revealed that 84% of those 75,000 killed were males.
