Many modern roads, especially in urban areas, are equipped with the latest technology to guide drivers and, more importantly, improve safety.
Traffic signs and pavement markings have been in use for over 100 years to provide essential guidance and delineation of the travel path. In the ensuing years, the performance of these systems has been greatly expanded with the introduction of retroreflective optics to increase visibility at night and in wet night-time conditions.
Road safety lobby groups have criticised Britain for pushing down its annual road fatality rate by a further 2% in the past year, the lowest figure since records began in 1926. The Reported Road Casualties Great Britain 2013 (RRCGB) Annual Report, published in September 2014, reveals that 1,713 people were killed in road accidents in the country during 2013, with the number of people seriously injured down by 6% to 21,657 versus 2012.
In the US, the president recently signed a short-term extension for highway funding. This is a two-month extension that will provide funding for highway infrastructure until the end of July. But it is a very temporary measure made as the US Government has so far been unable to agree the longer term deal that will guarantee highway investment.
