Manitou’s king of skid steers proves popular with US road contractors

Manitou’s ‘king’ of skid steers is a powerful beast, already popular with US road contractors
2106 Manitou’s skid steer loader, the V400, is already proving popular with US road contractors. Named ‘the King’ by the manufacturer, it is the largest skid steer loader available in the world.

It was launched in the US last summer and will be available in Europe from the autumn.

“In the US it has been mainly road contractors that have bought the machine, because it can do so much more work,” said Kelly Moore, Manitou product and training specialist. “It can work with a wide variety of attachments, such as the road cold planer which is on the display machine.

“It’s very strong and has very high performance. Contractors use it for high-productivity work.”

The V400 is a 1.8tonne-capacity machine, powered by a 99Hp 196 Cummins QSB 4.5 Tier III engine and providing a maximum torque of 442NM at 1,300rpm.

The ‘delux’ cab boasts a heater and air conditioning and is pressurised to avoid the ingress of dust and increase operator comfort. The machine can be operated by a Manitou T-bar control or a joystick. Moore said that the joystick has been the most popular choice so far, perhaps because this is most similar to an excavator control.

All the V400s will be manufactured at Maintou’s US production plant.
