The Malacca state government in Malaysia will spend US$196.75 million (MYR 612.30mn) to build and improve roads in the state. The budget will develop 73 road projects that will connect more places within the state.
In Australia, the states of New South Wales and Western Australia are both setting transport development as a priority. Both states are planning major spending programmes on new infrastructure projects, with transport representing a key portion of that future investment.
Malaysia’s Penang state has approved the PAN 1 Highway project but with conditions attached following an environmental impact study.
Work could start next year on the 19.5km project – officially called the Pan Island Link 1 - that will likely cost around US$1.7 billion, according to a report in the newspaper Sundaily.
The project will consist of 7.6km of viaducts, four tunnel sections totalling 10.1km in length and embankment sections totalling 1.8km.

Malaysian prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the toll-free Pan Borneo highway should trigger economic growth in Sarawak state which has been held back by the lack of a good road network.
Razak was speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between federal government officials, officials from the state of Sarawak and infrastructure company Lebuhraya Borneo Utara Sdn.

Plans are in hand for infrastructure upgrades in Malaysia. The local government in Selangor State is to carry out a series of infrastructure projects, including the construction of three or four highways with a total investment of US$2.44 billion. Meanwhile a new 6km toll road will be built to link Marunda with Kalibaru terminal in Indonesia's Tanjung Priok. This will cost an estimated US$167 million and forms part of a plan to have a railway and toll road linking other major facilities with the terminal.
