Legal hiatus delays major Tanzania highway project

A legal hiatus has delayed the construction of a highway in Tanzania linking Tunduru, Matemanga-Kilimasenra, Namtumbo, and Songea. Work has been suspended by the Tanzanian authorities following a dispute over whether the Progressive Constructions-Higleig Joint Venture (Progressive-Higleig) building the link has met performance targets. Meanwhile, the Tanzanian Ministry of Works is implementing four road upgrading projects in Tabora worth a combined value of around US$ 221.47 million (TZS 351.70bn).

A legal hiatus has delayed the construction of a highway in Tanzania linking Tunduru, Matemanga-Kilimasenra, Namtumbo, and Songea.

Work has been suspended by the Tanzanian authorities following a dispute over whether the Progressive Constructions-Higleig Joint Venture (Progressive-Higleig) building the link has met performance targets.

Meanwhile, the Tanzanian Ministry of Works is implementing four road upgrading projects in Tabora worth a combined value of around US$ 221.47 million (TZS 351.70bn).

The projects are being undertaken by four different China-based contractors: 7051 China Henan International Cooperation Group for Ndono-Tabora road; Chongqing Foreign Traders (Tabora-Nyahau road); 5544 Sinohydro (Tabora-Puge road); and 2661 China Communications Construction (Puge-Nzega road). Additionally, three other foreign companies had been appointed to oversee the project implementations including India-based SAI Consulting Engineering and Consulting Engineering for the Ndono-Tabora and Tabora-Nyahau sections, respectively, along with Australia-based 1326 SMEC International for Tabora-Puge and Puge-Nzega sections.
