A legal dispute is underway in Nicaragua over a road project in neighbouring Costa Rica

A complex and bitter legal battle is being fought in the courts in Nicaragua over the construction of a new road in neighbouring Costa Rica. The road in question runs parallel to the San Juan River and construction work on this project commenced in February 2012. But several environmental organisations have joined forces to sue the Costa Rican Government over the project. A complex and bitter legal battle is being fought in the courts in Nicaragua over the construction of a new road in neighbouring Costa Rica. The road in question runs parallel to the San Juan River and construction work on this project commenced in February 2012. But several environmental organisations have joined forces to sue the Costa Rican Government over the project. The organisations recently presented their allegations to the Central American Court of Justice (CCJ) during a public hearing in Nicaragua. The environmental organisations have made their final arguments against the projects but will have to wait for the CCJ to rule on the case.

    A total of 1,314 American children aged 14 and under died in US road crashes in 2009, according to new research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA said 179,000 injuries had also been caused to the same child age group following 2009 crashes. The agency says safety seats in passenger cars had been found to reduce the risk of crash deaths for children of four-years-old and below by 54%, and infants by 71%.
